There are moments in life when we realize we’ve been protecting ourselves from something that isn’t actually happening.
I had one of those moments today.
It didn’t come during some deep conversation or life-changing event. It came while I was thinking about a conversation my husband and I had yesterday and another one we had today. On the surface, they were about my business. In reality, they were about trust.
As I’ve been building Jones Ledger & Seal, I’ve discovered that I’m incredibly protective of it. That’s probably not surprising. I’ve invested a lot of time, energy, prayer, and hard work into creating something I can be proud of. Every decision feels significant because every decision is shaping the future of the business.
Yesterday, my husband reminded me that he wasn’t trying to step into my role. He simply wanted to stand beside me and help protect what I’m building. Then today, that conversation became real when someone wanted me to do something that would have required me to compromise the standards of my profession. Before making any promises, my husband brought the situation to me and trusted me to make the decision. When I explained why I couldn’t do it, that was the end of the conversation.
It wasn’t until later that something unexpected happened.
I caught myself referring to Jones Ledger & Seal as my business, and for the first time, those words didn’t feel complete.
Legally, it is my business. The licenses are mine. The commission is mine. The responsibility is mine.
But the future we’re building isn’t mine.
It’s ours.
Somewhere between yesterday and today, I stopped feeling like I had to protect my place in what I was building and started appreciating the place my husband already had. Not as the person leading the business, but as the person encouraging me, believing in me, and trusting me to lead it well.
Sometimes security doesn’t come from holding on tighter.
Sometimes it comes from realizing you’ve finally found someone who isn’t trying to take it from you.
